laila's adventures

BIOGRAPHY

As an infant, Laila was left to die in the dry heat of the desert near a small Amalj'aa camp in Southern Thanalan. Her father (who, in Laila's mind, is nothing more than "some man that she shares a small amount of DNA with") had begun privately seeing a miqo'te huntress within their tribe, eventually impregnating her unintentionally. However, Laila's father was not the nunh of the tribe, and Laila's birth mother had been previously flaunted around by the nunh himself as "his favorite." Seeking to bury any evidence of their budding romance and love affair, Laila's birth parents decided to abandon the baby, falsely assuming that the nearby Amalj'aa tribe would kill Laila upon finding her. However, when a small group of Amalj'aa scouts found Laila shivering, alone, and on the brink of death, they took pity on her, and brought her back to their tribe's camp. For a small time, Laila lived with the Amalj'aa as they nursed her back to health and tried to decide what to do with her. It didn't take them very long to reach the determination that they simply were not fit to raise a miqo'te child, and so Laila was left again, this time a year old and at the entrance to Ul'dah, where the Amalj'aa knew that someone would surely find her.And found her, they did - a small lalafell family from the Plainsfolk clan discovered young Laila there, and once they realized that she was not lost, but homeless, they settled on taking her into their home. They decided to refer to her as "Laila," a name suggested by one of the children in the family. The child had remembered it from a story book, noting that the name meant "daughter of the night," a perfect title for the new daughter they had found as the moon shone above. Laila has always gone by the name they gave her, as she's always had no interest in learning what her true name was, or if her parents had even cared enough to bother giving her one. After settling in, Laila quickly fit right into her new home with her adopted lalafell family, and, over time, formed a special bond with the father of the household, Bubo Boqabo. The family wasn't very wealthy, so they often lived in extremely close quarters and were forced to spend time together, whether they wanted to or not. At a fairly young age, Laila developed a fascination with gil, one that she still has to this day. She would attach herself to Bubo's side throughout her childhood, finding herself intrigued by his business dealings (and mostly by the way that talks of gil seemed to make any man crumble.) In an eager desire to help her family make ends meet, Laila took it upon herself at age twelve to look for ways to profit. Her first attempt involved threatening to break a Hyur man's nose if he didn't fork over some gil, and he laughed in her face in response to the demand. From there, Laila tried a different approach, telling a burly Roegadyn man the following week that she would expose his affair to his wife if he didn't pay her a handsome sum. She found herself walking away from that exchange with much, much heavier pockets, and she learned from the experience that brute force was seldom the best way to get people to do what you want - but, rather, that quick thinking and wit are the key. When her stand-in father, Bubo, discovered what she had done, he was not angry. In fact, the ordeal inspired him with ideas that could lead to huge profits. Bubo began bringing Laila with him everywhere he went, and trained her to extort gil from the unsuspecting. The pair found themselves profiting at a rapid pace, and they had built up quite the reputation through their exploits, too. When a scorned ex-lover wanted vengeance without wanting to get their own hands dirty, they'd seek out Bubo and Laila, to whom they would spill all kinds of secrets and ammunition. Through this successful operation, Bubo was able to pull his family out of the financial pressure they'd been stuck under for decades, and had even become well-known enough to begin associating with members of the Syndicate, handling tasks and "solving problems" for select members.Laila has found more independence since reaching adulthood, but continues to work with Bubo to rake in profits. What Bubo and Laila have truly is a partnership - Laila does not do business without consulting Bubo, and expects that he approaches business in the same way. Currently, Laila resides in a small room in The Quicksand thanks to an arrangement between Bubo and Momodi Modi that was established once Laila reached an age where had begun to outgrow the family's lalafell-sized furnishings and home.(Work In Progress)

QUICK FACTS

TRAITS:
- Laila was abandoned as an infant and deals with slimy people on a daily basis - due to her experiences, there isn't a single soul in Eorzea that she truly and completely trusts, as she's never had that kind of bond with anyone, and also doesn't truly believe that it's possible to find.
- Laila is known to employ quick wit and sarcasm to maneuver her way through social settings, and generally tends to find success in driving conversations in her desired direction.
- Laila likes to work hard AND play hard. She often spends her evenings visiting entertainment venues and dancing the night away.
- Despite honeyed words delivered to her by her many suitors (whose wallets she probably drained), Laila struggles to truly connect with others. In line with her tendency to distrust, she views conversation as a tool that everyone uses to work towards their own selfish ulterior motives, leaving her to find most interactions to be shallow and phony in nature. To Laila, conversation is a performance art, nothing more.
QUIRKS:
- Due to her unique childhood situation, Laila has a soft spot for lalafells, and does not tolerate when they are picked on or mistreated, often quickly jumping to the defense of perfect strangers as a result.
- After reaching adulthood, Laila sought out the Amalj'aa tribe who rescued her as an infant, and rekindled a relationship with them. She visits them often and proudly rides around town on the Cavalry Drake they gifted to her upon her return.
LIKES:
- The color red. Laila finds it striking, powerful, intimidating, and beautiful.
- Flowers. Laila finds them pretty and enjoys working them into her outfits. She also associates them with nostalgic memories of selling them to tourists around the Ruby Road Exchange for outrageous prices.
- Alcoholic beverages that don't taste alcoholic.
DISLIKES:
- Miqo'te culture overall, but, most especially, the culture of Seeker of the Sun tribes.
- Broken promises and things not being followed through on.
- Whoever her parents are. Laila has no interest in meeting them, or even learning anything about them.
NPC AFFILIATES:
Zhloe Aliapoh - Laila has been seen visiting and conversing with Zhloe Aliapoh on a regular basis, though nobody seems to know exactly why. The word around Idyllshire is that Laila is the single largest donor funding the Menphina's Arms orphanage that Zhloe runs, but who could say if that's truly fact or just a rumor?
Lord Lolorito Nanarito - Laila mostly knows Lord Lolorito through her father figure, Bubo Boqabo. Once she and Bubo had amassed enough notoriety within Ul'dah, she began to accompany Bubo to meetings with the Syndicate. Lolorito then started relying on Bubo and Laila to handle dirty work on his behalf for hefty sums, and Laila often assists with high-paying contracts assigned to Bubo by Lolorito.Momodi Modi - Laila maintains a pleasant working relationship with Momodi Modi, and often tries to do favors for her when possible in exchange for being granted temporary long-term residence at The Quicksand.(Work In Progress)
